Makhana Has a Grading System — And It Matters
Makhana (fox nuts or lotus seeds) has been consumed in India for centuries — as a fasting food, an Ayurvedic ingredient, and increasingly, as a modern superfood snack. But not all makhana is the same. Like cashews or rice, makhana is graded by size — and the grading system uses a unit called Suta.
What Is a Suta?
"Suta" is a traditional Indian unit of measurement used specifically for makhana. It refers to the number of makhana pieces that fit into a specific volume measure. The grading works inversely to the count:
- 4 Suta — smaller sized makhana, more pieces per measure
- 5 Suta — medium sized, good everyday quality
- 6 Suta — large, premium grade
- 6+ Suta — jumbo, the largest and most premium grade available
The higher the Suta number, the larger and fewer the makhana per measure — and the more premium the product.
Why 6+ Suta Is the Gold Standard
6+ Suta makhana represents the top tier of the grading scale. These are the largest, most uniform fox nuts — prized for their superior crunch, better flavour absorption, premium appearance, and consistent texture with no small, uneven, or hollow pieces.

Why Makhana Is a Superfood
Makhana is naturally low in calories, high in protein, and completely gluten-free — making it one of the most nutritionally balanced snacks available. A 30g serving provides approximately 105 kcal, 3.5g protein, 0.5g fat, 20g carbohydrates, and good amounts of magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus. It's also low on the glycaemic index, making it suitable for diabetics and those watching blood sugar levels.
